Sheetrock and floors - September 2023

In September, we hired a crew to install and finish sheetrock (drywall for my yankee friends) throughout the house. Thus far, this was the best money we've spent on the house. For starters, what a transformation! But second, the house was full of unlevel, uneven imperfections that had to be furred out. Thankfully, this crew did an amazing job at making everything as level and even as possible. Third, I hate sanding sheetrock so there's that bonus in hiring someone else to do the job.

Once the sheetrock was finished, we sprayed the entire house with primer. And when I say we, I mean my hubby. God love this man. He is the hardest working human I know. He works a full time job and runs our sandblasting business and never says no to all my crazy ideas. Which includes doing most of the grunt work on this project. It was all hands on deck for this one but we made wonderful memories with our girls. I'm thankful for these opportunities to teach them skills and a work ethic that isn't taught in school.

Funny side note, Jeff actually had to shave his arms after painting to remove all the white paint that stuck to his arm hair. He keeps his head shaved anyways so that was an easy fix to the paint in his hair but he had to bathe in lacquer thinner for his face and hands which was not pleasant. Guess what we purchased right after this? A nice paint suit. And he put it to work immediately on a big sandblasting/ paint job he just did for a local propane company. Poor guy never gets a day off!

With all the painting done, we tackled finishing the hardwood floors. Remember, all of the wood for the floors that we put down was taken off the walls or ceiling of the house. We installed it with the paint side down to reduce the amount of work load needed to finish the floors. The one bedroom and hallway upstairs retained their original floors in place. All of the wood has imperfections throughout. There are knots, color variations, nail holes, wear and gaps. They are beautiful. Not everyone will appreciate the character of 120+ year old wood, but I certainly do. Our oldest helped us sand the floors in our farmhouse and he didn't hesitate to help us out on this project. He did a great job and I love how they turned out!

And last for the month of September, the girls and I installed the master bathroom floor. I had originally wanted to put tile in all the bathrooms, but having done tile ourselves in the past, Jeff reminded me of how much work is involved. I did some research and found a waterproof click tile application by Stainmaster. It was super easy to install and it looks beautiful!

Stay tuned for floor finishing reveal and more updates!
