Mom and Ashlee

This was a special day for our project. My dad passed shortly after we started demo back in September and I never got the chance to tell him about it. But when my sweet mom made a visit to VA in October, she jumped at the opportunity to join us for a work day. I love that she gets to share this experience with us. She literally puts me to shame in what she can do at her age versus what I can/ can't do. It's gotta be the yoga, I need some yoga in my life...

Anyways, our good friend Desmond and his nephew also joined us that day. We were able to get everything out of the house that we demolished except for the bathroom fixtures. We repurposed the upper kitchen metal cabinets for storage in our garage. Thankfully, we know a good sandblaster https://candjsandblasting.com who cleaned them up and painted them white...wink, wink ;)

Clean up tip

Just a small tip for anyone wanting to take on a project of this size, I recommend getting a dumpster for cleanup. It is a little bit of an expense, but there is only so much that you can burn by code or take to your local dump. We have used the large, 40 cu. yd. roll off size, they fill up a lot faster than you think they would. For local readers, we have used County Waste for both of our projects with good success. https://county-recycling.com/lynchburg/

So, after clean up, we were able to assess the damage in the bathroom a little bit closer. We will get an even better look once we get the fixtures out, but this gives us an idea of how many floor joists need repaired/ replaced. I like to keep wood floors, even ones in bad shape, but this whole room may be a loss as far as original floors go. We plan to split this room into a master bath on one side and a half bath with laundry on the other. Tile floors typically work best in these types of spaces anyways, so it's not a total design loss. One thing to keep in mind as you work, your plan needs to be fluid. There are some things that you will find that you are unwilling to compromise on, but others you must. The more flexible, creative and resourceful you can be, the more fun you can have with a project. A part of my type A got a good beat down in our first project. Just sayin...
